Just like that my final semester of undergraduate school has come to an end. The last few weeks were full of late nights, stress, and a few tears. But in the end everything worked out and I was left with a project in which I am very proud!
If you have been following along my journey you have seen how research turned into concept and concept turned into initial ideations and than these ideas were developed. To fully develop an interior design project you have to create something that others cannot only understand, but will be able to build! Many designers say this is their favorite part of their job, being able to build their creations and see the real life 3D space. I am excited to share this experience in the future.
But school is about learning and practicing the skills necessary for the workforce, so in the last couple weeks I worked on creating final renderings to show to "clients", a specification book (which provides information for every piece of furniture/equipment/material in the project), and of course the construction documentation.
Here are some of my final renderings for my Family Birthing Center project.
I was truly blessed, because I never got bored of my project. I was really inspired by the real impact designing a labor and delivery floor could have on mothers, visitors, and staff. For every decision I made, I tried to have a logical reason behind why I was making those decisions. Because of this I have found it very satisfying to talk about my project with others. Admittedly, the specification book was not the most thrilling part of the project, but I appreciate how important it is to the project. Another important part of the project that I completed in the last couple weeks was the construction documentation. We did not do a complete set for the final project, but trust me I am happy we didn't. Here are a few of my completed construction documents sheets.
Interior design is still a relatively new profession, still in its infancy as something completely separate from decorating. As I begin my transition into the professional world I think it is so important to explain to those outside the industry that we are more than just color pickers. I am extremely passionate for this industry and believe it has the real potential to shape the world we live in. My thesis project was more than just creating an aesthetic place. It was about designing an environment that has the potential to minimize stress and reduce medical intervention. There are millions of environmental factors which impact our everyday life, that perhaps go unnoticed, but if we apply design thinking we can promote wellness, limit waste, and encourage a better lifestyle.
So why does my senior thesis matter...
“Birth is a natural experience. The patients in a labor and delivery unit are not sick and therefore, the traditional, sterile hospital environment does not meet the needs of these expecting mothers. Strategically designing a space that is comfortable and individualized for laboring women can make the birthing process go smoother and lessen medical intervention. This is achieved through reducing stress and stimulating positive hormones through environmental factors, such as, lighting levels.”

Finally, this semester would not have been possible without the continuing support of my family, friends, and professors. I have loved every moment of my last four years at Stout and look forward to staying in touch with all the wonderful people I have met here.
Cheers to the Spring 2018 Interior Design Class!!!
