PERSONAL BIOGRAPHY

Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is born an artist, the problem is how to remain one once we grow up.” For many years this quote has held a special place in my heart. I grew up in Milwaukee, WI and always considered myself an artist. I loved sports and school, but most of all I loved drawing! For a long time, I thought my dream career was to become an architect. It was not until my Junior year of high school that I realized commercial interior design could be the perfect combination of my passions for both art and architecture. I am now in my final year in the University of Wisconsin – Stout interior design program (and loving it!).

After graduation I would love to work at a medium to large size architecture and design firm which might allow me the opportunity to travel in the future. I am extremely open minded on the types of projects I will pursue and hope to be able to experiment in a wide variety of projects before deciding. Ideally, I would like to become a member of a firm dedicated to sustainability with integrated project teams. A few goals I have is to get my NCIDQ and LEED certification. A long-term goal I have is to obtain my master’s degree, so I might have the opportunity to work part time as an interior design professor.

“Design is not just what it looks like, design is how it works” (Steve Jobs). It is the balance between technical skill and creativity; this is what prompted me to choose design. I knew I wanted a job that allowed me to exercise both the left and right side of my brain. Interior design allows me to positively impact the function and efficiency of a building, create a unique customer experience, and to implement environmentally conscious practices into a historically unsustainable industry.

This year I am excited to share my passion of interior design with students in the program through a variety of different leadership roles. I am currently working as the Interior Design Tutor at UW-Stout. For this position I assist the Interior Design Studio 1 professor with teaching the underclassmen Revit. I conduct in-class demos and am available for trouble shooting and questions afterwards. I also assisted in the organizing of the materials resource library for their benefit. My second leadership role within the interior design community is as a Student Member of the IIDA Advisory Board. This is an opportunity for me to provide feedback to professionals about events our students are interested in, as well as, giving me the opportunity to help form connections between the Interior design students at UW-Stout and IIDA Northland Chapter. Finally, I am the Events Coordinator for the school’s Interior Design Club. This position is especially important to me, because in the past I have felt that this organization within our school was subpar. I have dedicated a lot of time to help boost attendance through planning a variety of activities. Although the year has just begun the attendance of our meetings has skyrocketed and we already have eight major events and firm tours on this semesters docket with even more exciting events for the spring! My goal is, with the help of my other board members, to transform the interior design club into a fun and great resource for our students to connect with the design industry.
